Running pace calculator

Running pace is time divided by distance. A 5 km run in 30 minutes is a pace of 6:00 per kilometre (9:39 per mile). Enter any two of distance, time and pace below to get the third, plus speed and splits.

Enter two of the three values: distance, time or pace.

Pace chart: finish times by pace

Even-pace finish times for common race distances. Real races rarely run at a perfectly even pace.

How to calculate running pace

Divide the total time by the distance. 50 minutes for 8 km is 50 ÷ 8 = 6.25 minutes per kilometre, which is 6:15 /km. To convert pace per kilometre to pace per mile, multiply by 1.609.

Finish time is pace multiplied by distance: at 5:30 /km a 10 km run takes 55 minutes.

Pace for easy runs

Most training for beginners is done at an easy, conversational effort. A simple check is the talk test: at moderate intensity you can talk but not sing. That pace is different for everyone and changes with heat, hills and sleep, so it is better to run by effort than to chase a number from a table.

FAQ

What pace is a 30-minute 5K?

A 30-minute 5K is a pace of 6:00 per kilometre or about 9:39 per mile.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace per kilometre by 1.609. For example, 5:00 /km × 1.609 ≈ 8:03 /mile.

How long is a half marathon and a marathon?

A half marathon is 21.0975 km (13.1 miles) and a marathon is 42.195 km (26.2 miles).

Should I run every run at my target race pace?

Usually not. Beginner plans keep most runs easy and conversational; faster paces are a small part of the week. If you have health conditions, check with a doctor before increasing intensity.
